The Hiatus by Dansmonsters
Hello.
I am always trying to juggle. I’m a terrible juggler.
I want to write, I want to read, I want to draw. I try to make half decent you tube videos and create podcasts.
I want to do all the things. However, I have realised that there is just not enough space to do everything. Certainly, at this moment in time.
I started the Library of Doom reviews as a way to force myself to get reading after a long time of being in a reading slump. I worked in a book shop for a few years, and it was wonderful. Not the actual way the business was run from the top, which was dreadful. The day to day dealing with books, talking to customers etc was something I really enjoyed. It was a different type of retail, where you could spend time with customers and got to know them.
However, with 3 kids and a mortgage, the money was not great, and it had to change. I miss it to this day. Pretty much as soon as I stopped, I stopped reading. I have no idea why as it was something I loved and loved to share.
Anyway, after a couple of years of not really getting into any books I started rebuilding my collection of pulp novels. As this grew and sat there doing nothing, I kept promising myself I would get around to actually reading these, good or bad.
So, after seeing blogs and you tube, booktubers etc, I thought that’s it. Read em and review them! That way it gives me some kind of momentum and a reason to finish them rather than sat next to my bed for months half read. I set myself a personal deadline.
I’ve reviewed just over 30 books so far. It’s been a great way to practice my writing and get me reading more. I have loved it. Unfortunately, at some point it started to feel like a chore rather than a joy. Having a notebook with me while reading the book became a pain in the backside. I think that’s when I REALISED, I am not a reviewer. There are many other people much better than me at reviewing books and dedicate their time to it. I like making art. Drawing monsters, making zines and comics, sculpting weird creature and occasionally writing stories. Reviewing is not for me, I don’t think.
So, saying that, I’m putting the reviews on hiatus for a while. I will leave everything here so please feel free to peruse at your leisure. I may post occasionally if I reads something I really like.
There are plenty of book reviewers on you tube who do this much better than me and you won’t go wrong with the paperback warrior website for reviews of all things pulp.
If you want to see my drawings check out dansmonsters on instagram and The Monster Bomb Club on you tube. You can also check out my artwork and ramblings at dansmonsters.substack.com.
If anyone would like to download some of my artbooks for free, please check out my GUMROAD store or you can support me on KOFI.
Right, Ok , I’m off to do draw some monsters.
Be safe. Go outside. Draw everyday. Read everyday. Listen to music everyday . Write something. It’ll be better than mine!
Cheers!
