Dead Leaves by Andrew David Barker

Wonderful tale of bootleg VHS and THe Video Recordings Act in the UK

As you no doubt you all know I’m a massive Evil Dead fan. This is not a story set in that fictional universe.

Dead Leaves is a book anyone who was a teenager in the 1980’s decade in the UK. It’s a wonderful nostalgia trip wehter you liked the Evil Dead or not.

The Video Recordings Act came into action in 1984 . Youn can read more about it here and there are various documentaries about it. It’s a embroiled topic I wont go on about here, but it basicaly randomly banned hundreds of VHS home videos , especially horror. One of these was the Evil Dead.

This is the tale of a teenager trying to get hold of an elusive copy of the banned movie and the trials and tribulations of life at the time. It’s funny but it also brought a tear to my eye. It’s a hell of a nostalgia high , from school , going to VHS rental stores and what was happening in the UK politically at the time, family , friends and all wrapped in a large plastic VHS tape box.

A great read from a great much under appreciated author. Andrew David BArker is a film maker by trade, but has written several novels . You can check them out here. His Novel The Electric is also wonderful , about a cinema run by ghosts that makes films for ghosts. You can also check out his substack about film making Outrun the Doubt
